Blog tour In Harmony by Helena Newbury

Everyone expects her to succeed….
Karen plays the cello like an angel, and it’s the only thing that makes her truly feel alive. But her father’s dream—for her to join a prestigious orchestra—leaves no time in her life for anything but music…not even love. Trapped on her path, she doesn’t know how to rebel.

Everyone expects him to fail….
Connor plays rock guitar like the devil himself, and his ability has got him all the way from a dead-end life in Belfast to a scholarship at Fenbrook Academy. But beneath his arrogance and charm, he doesn’t believe he has what it takes. He’s spent his time in New York drinking and partying, and the only future he sees is a return to Ireland as soon as he flunks out.

But what no one expects….
When Karen’s duet partner is injured, the bad boy guitarist and the shy, sheltered cellist are forced to team up. Neither likes the idea, but what begins as anger and distrust slowly spirals into love…and lust. If they can face up to their feelings, they might just have a chance together. If Connor will allow Karen to stop his fall, maybe he can show her a life she never thought possible....

Welcome to my blog Helena !
Interview with Helena Newbury!!!!
1) Please tell us something about you and about your series Fenbrook?

I'm a New Adult Romance author living in London. The series is set at Fenbrook Academy, a top performing arts college in the heart of New York where dancers, actors and musicians all mix together. Each book focuses on a different couple, but supporting characters recur.

2) How long have you been writing?
Dance For Me was my first book, published in June 2013. But I've been writing on and off for years before that - it was a long time before I had the courage to tackle a novel.

3) Why did you decide to write from two points of view?
Dance For Me is about two people with secrets and I felt it was important to see things from Darrell's point of view as well as Natasha's so we could understand his motivations. In the second book, In Harmony, I wanted the reader to be unsure about how Connor feels about Karen. Getting inside his head would have destroyed the mystery, so it's all from Karen's point of view.

4) Tell us five random facts about you?
I have a thing for fast cars (what we'd call being a "petrolhead" in the UK). I haven't found a way to work that into a book, though. Yet.
I wrote Dance For Me in a coffee shop and wound up wired on caffeine most of the time.
I can't dance, but did start doing dancer's stretches while I wrote Dance For Me and still do today. I credit them with getting rid of my backache.
I'm a massive Starbucks fan, which is why they keep cropping up in the books (yes, there really is a Starbucks in the Pentagon).
I really like Mexican food, but--unlike in the US--it's quite difficult to get good stuff in Britain.

5) Which book was more difficult for you to write and why?
The second one, because it was the second one :) You want to go in new directions to keep things fresh, but you don't want to annoy readers by deviating too much from the first book. It's like the 'difficult second album' for musicians.

6) Which is your favorite book and favorite author?
Ow, don't ask me to pick a favorite. That's cruel. But I'll tell you what I just finished, that I really loved - Going Under by S. Walden. It was superb.

7) Where do you get the motivation to keep writing and doing what you love?
I don't need anything to get me up in the morning and get me writing (well, maybe coffee). It's *not* writing that bothers me. I get cranky and nervous if I haven't written for more than a few days, unless I'm on an actual vacation.

8) Outside of writing what do you do for fun?
I love to travel. I'd like to go back to the US sometime next year and see Vegas, New Orleans, Washington and a few other places. I also run, but I'm not very good at it :)

9) What are you working now?
Now that I've finished In Harmony, next on my list is the Clarissa and Neil story that's coming out in late 2013. It's going to be free, but exclusive to my mailing list so sign up if you want to get a copy - http://list.helenanewbury.com

10) Anything else you want to share with your readers?
I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who bought the first book. It's been a crazy ride--I never expected the level of success that Dance For Me had and it's allowed me to keep doing what I love - so thank you! And thank you Adriana for having me!

HINT 2:Tacky cocktail served with pineapple, sparklers and "a goddamn plastic elephant."

Thank you Helena for stopping today on my blog and for the interview!!!

Waiting #7 Shards of Us by K.R. Caverly

Release day:8 October
We meet every Wednesday night in hotel room #364. We stay there until morning--kissing, laughing, healing one another. We're both broken people, him with his alcoholic family, me with my murdered one. I don't know who he is; I don't ask for his name. I don't question him. I only love how he makes me feel, how he makes me forget just how alone I am in this world, and for now, that's all I need.

We have three rules:

1) No sex.
2) No personal questions.
3) No leaving the hotel room until morning. Not ever.

For four months, I followed the rules. I came to the hotel room every Wednesday night, and his presence never failed to cure me. I was happy with him. But one night, he doesn't show. So when I hear a scream down the hallway, I can't help myself. I break rule number three. I leave the room.

My life has never been the same since.

Writing for an audience

Authors are faced with a choice when they’re contemplating what to write: Do I write the book that readers want or the book that’s in my heart (or head, as the case may be)? I think it’s similar to the question faced by musicians. Every day we see pop singers churning out the same kind of music, done by the same producers, wrapped up in a very similar package. They sell the heck out of these songs. The word “popstar” is part of our everyday language for a reason. Then there are the musicians who just do their own thing. Sometimes they catch the attention of listeners and gain a huge fan following; other times they toil away for years in relative anonymity, despite being enormously talented.

Obviously, writing what readers are hooked on at the moment means that if you do it well, there should be a ready market for your work. The promotion and sales should, in theory, be easier, and if you write for a living, that stuff is important.

I know as a reader when I find a book I love, I finish it and then go buy the next ten books I can find that seem very similar to it. I want to recreate the experience. I search for similar covers, similar blurbs, similar characters, even similar writing styles. Once I read my first vampire book, I went on a binge. I think I read thirty of them before I found Twilight, and then I was seriously hooked for life. I still read that genre, fifteen years after my first find.

As a writer, I want to write what readers are addicted to. I want to dive into that pool of talent and rise to the top, letting my writing set me apart from my peers while at the same time knowing that I’m writing for the masses. The problem is, my characters have a very hard time following my direction. I tell my male lead, “You need to be a bad boy with very few redeeming qualities! How about if you’re belligerent or a womanizer? Can we go with that?” But so far, despite having said it to several characters, they never listen and I’m left with what they want to do and who they want to be.

My first attempt at popular NA fiction was Shine Not Burn. The main male character, Mack MacKenzie, is about as far from a belligerent bad boy as a man can get. He’s strong, he knows who he is, and he’s unapologetically in love. What can I say? I guess I’m one of those people who writes what’s in her head and heart, not what she thinks most readers want. Lucky for me, readers ended up liking what Mack and Andie had to say, even though the book was a little different than mainstream NA romance today.

My next book is definitely not mainstream either. Don’t Make Me Beautiful was inspired by a girl I read about in a magazine over twenty years ago. I remember nothing about her personally, but her story never left me. It’s as if for the last twenty years, she’s been sitting in her living room waiting for me to set her free.
As I wrote the book, I was driven to finish it because I kept getting the impression that Nicole, the main character and victim of domestic violence, was sitting there, frozen in time, trapped until I gave her the means to escape. It was, hands down, the hardest book I’ve written to date. It’s tough to completely separate myself from my work, so I went through some of the characters’ pain right along with them. It was exhausting.

I have several more books planned before the end of the year. I publish about a book per month, so that gives me lots of opportunities to explore what’s in my head. Maybe one of these days I’ll get that bad boy down on paper. I have a feeling he’s in there somewhere. And I have the book all ready for him too. The name of it is Rebel. 

Quotes

“I don’t want you to change. Since the moment I met you, I knew you weren’t like me. You were better. You are better. You’re the person I wish I could be. Your whole life…it means something. It means something so big that angels and demons are buzzing around you, trying to take some for themselves. You care about people besides yourself. Like, you really care. Not because of how it makes you feel, but because of how it makes them feel.” I step closer to Charlie. She doesn’t move away.“
I love the way you are, Charlie. I love it so much it tears me apart. I think about what would happen if I didn’t have you in my life— you, the girl you were when I met you—and I feel like I can’t breathe.” I trace my thumb over the dip below her bottom lip. “All my life, all I’ve ever wanted was to take. But with you, all I want is to give you everything—every creature in the sea, every star in the sky…my own beating heart. I love you, Charlie. Just the way you are, I love you.
